As the commander of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy cherishes and is best friends with each and every one of them. Luffy doesn’t seem particularly smart at first; he frequently has a childlike perspective on the world and is readily amazed by the little things. But because of his direct and uncomplicated perspective on the world, there are times when he is the only one who can look past the happenings and determine what needs to be done.

The Japanese archetype of the (sometimes simple-minded) young male hero/adventurer with a heart of gold is often characterized by an insatiable appetite; in Luffy’s case, this hunger may be heightened by his elastic stomach. Luffy is among the characters who have been assigned the middle initial “D.”

Luffy is a humorous and somewhat dizzy guy, but he also possesses an unquenchable optimism, commitment, and sense of determination. He will stop at nothing to save his allies and friends. He possesses incredible strength and fortitude to support that as well. Like his brother, he hasn’t seemed to be concerned about his incapacity to swim since ingesting the devil fruit. A lot of these characteristics are shared by Ds. His grandfather is the only person with whom he truly exhibits dread, to the extent that his name alone intimidates him.

No matter how heartless they may be, Luffy never kills any of his opponents. Instead, he regularly sends them flying, knocking them unconscious or battering them until they are on the verge of death. This causes some of the villains, like Buggy the Clown and Alvida, to seek retribution. Oda clarifies that the goal is to punish the villains for their crimes rather than to uphold morality; he believes that murdering the villains would be an excessively mild punishment and that letting them live to witness the destruction of their aspirations would be a far more appropriate penalty.

Luffy wants to become Pirate King and find the One Piece. He is aware that in order to succeed, he must overcome a formidable foe, such as Shanks, his childhood hero, and the World Government.
